Tile Saw Chipping Edges

If you layout any tiles for a floor or wall space be sure to install those tiles with cut edges nearest to the edge away from any middle areas.

Make sure the tile doesn t touch the blade before doing this. That way even with chipping you most likely won t be able to tell or even see it especially if it gets covered up by moulding. A wet tile saw cuts tiles made of ceramic and porcelain leaving a clean smooth edge. Notching one end set the saw blade or platform at a depth that will cut through the full thickness of the tile.

Try these suggestions out. As mentioned owning a wet saw is not economically feasible. Place the tile on the platform with one end of the mark where you will make the cut facing the blade but don t touch. Now you are going to make the notch.

Before using any tool to cut tile measure the glazed side of the tile to determine where you need to make the cut. You can work the cut edge a little with a diamond impregnated or other hard abrasive block or grinder but that worked for me better on porcelain tile where i was able to get a factory looking edge. Set your blade so that this time it will cut through the whole remaining thickness of the tile. Replace damaged tile cut out the grout around the edges of the damaged tile with a grout saw or scrape it out with an old screwdriver. Turn the saw on. Push the tile into the blade along the shallow.

To notch the tile follow these steps. Cutting slowly with a good blade on a well aligned wet saw gives the best results but in my experience there will always be some minor chipping. Push the tile into the saw blade approximately 1 or 2 inches. Even with the best wet tile saws out there you can and will run into some minor chipping from time to time.
