The answer was simple but i ll admit i had to think on it.

My contractor suggested transitioning to the ceiling by bringing the one inch squares down into the wall about 5 inches with a pencil line at the ceiling wall corner and a chair rail tile between the lowest row of one inch tiles and the 16 x 16 tiles.

1 cut last tile and make it into two tiles 2 leave the gap and grout with flex grout 3 use a bull nose tile and cut last tile shorter to accomodate the bull nose tile.
To do this measure the height of the wall and divide it by the width of the tile plus one grout joint using a measuring tape.
This will tell you how large your cut at the ceiling should be.

I would grout to the ceiling with the same colour as the rest of the walls and as silicone does not paint over i would only recommend decorators caulk.

You don t want a 1 2 inch cut running around the ceiling.
They can be installed right up to the edge of the shower and need no transition to the wall.
To give the edge a clean water tight finish place a piece of masking tape one grout joint away from.
With the shape that we are left with ceilings by plasterers these days i always find it a required practise to cut as accurately as possible to follow the ceiling line.
