Before i can cover up the brick with new beautiful tile i need to smooth out the surface.
So i took a peek at marble tile just for fun and once i brought it home and saw it with the fireplace i was head over heels.
Choose from ceramic tile or natural stone tile like marble granite or slate.
The before and after images are stunning.
Keep setting tiles until you reach the top of the surround.
I went with these 2 x4 venatino marble tiles.
It was built in 1923 and it has such an abundance of character and charm that it s fun to restore and renovate simply because you get to unveil and experience some of the old world charm that seemed so natural for those older homes.

Install thinset cement base directly to the existing brick or apply a cement board substrate.
Go over the entire area with a wire brush to dislodge any loose mortar then scrub off the soot with a rag soaked in white vinegar.
In many cases skim coating the existing brick with thinset will create a strong smooth surface for tile installation.
